can't update

Asked by Stone-wrold

Binary package hint: yelp

When update the system, I always get the following error msg:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/edgy/universe/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.46 80]
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

This is not a bug, but rather, a support question. It sounds like you still have repository entries in your /etc/apt/sources.list file leftover from Edgy. Since Edgy is no longer supported, the repositories do not exist anymore, which is why you are getting a 404 error.

It appears that you are using Hardy Heron, so you can comment out the line(s) in your sources.list file. Open it for editing:
 gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and place a # in front of any line that has "edgy" in it. Save and close, then run
 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get upgrade
If you need help with that or are unsure, please post the contents of your sources.list file.
 cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Can you help with this problem?
