ubuntu is designed around a security system that means you can only access the folders in your specific home directory. to access the entire system you need 'root priviages' to do that you need to open a terminal and type 'gksudo nautilus'

be fair warned however that you can easly destroy your entire system using the root account in this way

Thanks Gord that seems to have solved the problem.
Do I need to reset the system to prevent inadvertant access by others?
Thanks

If i'm not mistaken gksudo will log-out root priveleges after you finished the application you used or a few minutes after using the program you gksudo.

What I do is use gksudo if I use the 'Alt-F2'
or sudo if I use gnome terminal to issue commands.

some times if you are a newbie like me. you can use sudo su.
then issue your commands.
after which just type exit.
and root will be logged out.
