firefox toolbar won't respond

The toolbars at the top of the Firefox screen are not responding.FILE EDIT VIEW HISTORY BOOKMARKS TOOLS AND HELP will not open.I used Synaptic to remove Firefox completely and then reinstalled it but same problem.Any suggestions?
