ubuntu 11.10, playing around with compizconfig and ubuntu tweak. lost desktop (side menu)

Asked by lrs52200

I installed and updated Ubuntu 11.10. I installed Ubuntu Tweak. I used to have a side menu on my desktop as well as my name, etc.. on the upper right-hand corner of the desktop. Its gone. Not sure what I did. I now have only the traditional top menu bar (file, edit, view, go, bookmarks, help).

What in the world did I do and how can I fix it?

Try to do this:
1. Login into Ubuntu
2. Open a terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T
3. Insert and run this command:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz-1
unity --reset

If when you hit CTRL + ALT + T and nothing happen, do this:
1. At login screen select Unity 2D as default session
2. Open a terminal
3. Insert and run this command:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz-1
unity --reset

I tried both options but had no luck. I continued to surf for answers and found this Ubuntu thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1867531

I feel so stupid! This is what it was: "Unity plugin was unticked in CompizConfig"

Thank you for helping Enrico. I guess its true that the most simple answers are typically overlooked!
