Babette,

I'm assuming that you're using the Gnome desktop (the default in Ubuntu) and Firefox.

Firstly, open the page you wish to create a shortcut to.

At the top of the Firefox window, you will see the address of the page. For example, the address of this page is https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/yelp/+question/16451.

Double click that address and it should be selected (turn a different colour). Then right-click on it, and select "Copy".

Next, right-click somewhere on your desktop and select "Create Launcher". Change "Type" from "Application" to "Location". For "Name", type the name you wish to give the shortcut.

Then right-click in the box next to "Location", and select "Paste". The address of the page should appear. You can now click OK, and the shortcut should appear on your desktop.

Good luck!

Chris

Babette,

In that case, does it ask for a box labelled "command"? if so, type "firefox [address]" (without the ""), for example:

firefox https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/yelp/+question/16451

Does this help?

Thanks for everyone's help. I think I'm just so technicalogy (real word?) challenged I may be hopeless :))lol I did manage to get site icons on my desktop last nite but i'm not sure if it was actually the right way, hopefully it wont cause a systems issue later? I was talking to a embarq rep about my email service and mentioned I was having trouble w/linux and creating "shortcuts" to desktop and he suggested I access the site and in file go to Save As "desktop" which I did and now I do have a few sites on my desktop. However when first accessed I dont always see the images, just the words and box w/red letters (?) make sense? I am able to get into the site and eventually do get all the images. If this an acceptable way to use shortcuts in linux or will it backfire on me later somehow? Also how do i get all the images to appear when I first access the sites?
Really appreciate this site by the way :))

Babette,

It sounds like the method suggested by the Embarq rep is actually saving a *copy* of the page on your desktop rather than a shortcut, which is why images are not loading.

Going back to your original request, it is a little complex but try this:

1. Click on Applications, open the Internet menu, and then drag the menu entry for Firefox Web Browser onto your desktop.
2. Right-click on the newly created desktop icon and select Properties. Change the "Name" to the name you wish to give the shortcut.
3. Click on the "Launcher" tab, and change the %u in "Command" to the address of the page you wish the shortcut to point to.
4. Click on OK.

Does this help?

Cheers,

Chris
