Can't find AVG antivirus after download in Xubuntu

Asked by Kato4u

I am new to Linux, I installed Xubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Laptop. The install went fine, even recognized my wireless-g USB adapter. I tried downloading/installing AVG antivirus and although I can see the downloaded file, it won't install and says it is already installed. What am I doing wrong? I cannot find the program (AVG antivirus) on the desktop or in Applications.

Can you give an output of:

dpkg -l | grep -i avg; ps -ef | grep avg

I tried to restart the computer and after typing in my login password all I am getting is the wallpaper with a cursor that wont move and the harddrive is spinning but nothing is happening. I'll try those commands if I can get the computer to boot up.

if your desktop hangs like this, you can press Strg+Alt+F1 to get to a console. from there you can continue to solve the problem. (and to get back to a working desktop)

(just a additional note: avg is a terminal based program, it used to have a -gui, bitdefender for unices has a gui.)
