Resolution not Available on 9.10

Asked by jacek

Hello,

I have been using 8.04 for the past year and a half and on it I have used the following display settings:
1280x1024 61Hz

I have installed 9.10 yesterday and those resolution options are not available, even after installing the nvidia drivers. I have tried few options but nothing looks as good as it did on 8.04.

Do I need to downgrade to 8.04? or are there tools that will provide me the 1280x1024 61Hz on 9.10?

Please advice,
Jacek

If you have installed the nvidia driver correctly, you should be able to go to SYSTEM/NVIDIA x server settings to open the Nvidia configuration tool. Click on Xserver display configuration in the left hand panel then choose the resolution from the Resolution drop down list. 1280x1024 is available on my system. In fact that is the resolution I use. My nvidia driver is 185.18.36.

Keith,

but the resolution 1280x10.24 is no longer available with 61Hz as it was on 8.04. Can this exact configuration be accomplished on 9.10?

If you run:

sudo nvidia-xconfig; gksudo nvidia-settings

Then set the resolution to something (anything will do). Then click "Save to X config file"

You can then run:

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and change the resolution in the screen section, save the new file and reboot. Done

hi Actionparsnip,

I did you steps and still this did not work. Resolution 1280x1024 is available on 9.10 but NOT with 61Hz as it is on 8.04. when I followed your steps it just deaults to 50 Hz under 1280x1024

Then change the:

1280x1024

to

1280x1024@60

or try

1280x1024_60

see which works for you

Actionpsrsnip,

That is the thing, all other options dont have the same sharp look as 1280x1024 WITH 61Hz. Any Advice???

I tried all of the options, but I want t know how to get that specific one: 1280x1024 WITH 61Hz

So you manually editted the xorg.conf to try both options?

Here is an exmple xorg.conf:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/modifying-xorg.conf-to-set-up-monitor-to-1280x1024-60hz-refresh-rate.-669281/

Yu will notice the monitor section mostly, add those extra refresh lines to your xorg.conf file. This will help. After editting the xorg.conf file you will need to reboot to apply the new setting (or restrt x but telling new users to reboot is just easier)

Hi Actionparsnip,

Thank you for all your help, I appreciate it. But i just went back to 8.04 and all looks sharp:) I am not sure why but the 1280x1024 and 61Hz just looks perfect on my old CRT Monitor. I hope this option will be available in 10.04.

Cheers from Poland!
Jacek
