nvidia graphic card not working on 2.6.31 kernel, still working fine on 2.6.28 kernel : why ?

ok run:

sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia*; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

This will remove the driver and your system will use the open driver, reboot the system and boot to the 31 kernel. You can then run:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-96

To install the driver under the new kernel, DKMS will now take place against the new kernel to give the driver kernel module.

Unfortunately, it did not solve the problem.
At first, I thought it did not work because it did while running the
2.6.28 kernel : from the output, it upgrade only the running kernel.
So I redid it while running the 2.6.31 kernel, but either with the open
driver, either with the nvidia driver (even after running
'nvidia-xconfig'), it did not work for the 2.6.31 kernel, while it works
fine with the 2.6.28 kernel.
So, for now, I keep the 2.6.28 kernel, since I prefer the high-graphics
mode ....

You are not alone...This has been reported as a bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/501338 Please go there and add on more information to help fix this bug.
