issue with 1st ever boot after install of 9.10

Try installing with basic video driver. This may be second or third option
in the list.

How do I install with basic video driver? what list do you talk about it?
Are you saying that I should reinstall Ubuntu with basic video driver? That basic video driver is 2nd or 3rd option on the list? what list?

You are correct. I mean try 'reinstalling' the Ubuntu.
When you boot the LiveCD, the first screen will ask you to select language and on the next screen you will see many(4-5) options.
The options will be similar to
1. 'Try Ubuntu without ..........................'
2. Install Ubuntu
3. Install Ubuntu with basic/generic video driver
4. Boot from Local hard drive
5...............

Choose the option 'with basic video driver'.

on my screen with ubuntu 9.10:

The options are:
1. 'Try Ubuntu without ..........................'
2. Install Ubuntu
3. check disk for defects
4. memory test
5. Boot from first hard disk

I don't see the option ' Install Ubuntu with basic/generic video driver'

Ok, I found it under F4 modes. "Safe Graphics mode" and I'll let you know if it solves my problem. I am installing now. This is very misleading. I would think that the option only affects the installation session, not subsequent session after installation. Why aren't any boot options like safe graphics mode where (vga type) is used?
