I can't change my resolution...it is on 800 by 600

Asked by tim

I tried some of the FAQ, but my problem is I can't navigate on my desktop as everything is so big. So I can't get accessories or system, etc. I tried booting with the Live CD and install the NVIDIA driver, but I guess in Live CD you can't becuase I can't a 'no not enter' sign when I try to activate. The problem game suddenly although I had to reinstall 9.0.4 about a week ago as I had crashed the system. Anyway I was just watching a video, and the screen went blank...when I rebooted I got this 800 by 600 resolution.

from the Live CD I tried the Synaptic Package Manger...it won't load as it said, "you have 2 broken package on your system...use the broken filter to locate them" I not sure what that is, also I tried to launch firefox from the LiveCD and it won't go

Have you tried using 'sudo aptitude' to see if it will fix the packages or install the driver for you?

I saw all these packages being removed from my computer and it freaked me out! I rebooted back to my installed system, and could access the system tab, and now I have an NVIDIA tab under Administration. So with that I was able to get back to a normal & workable resolution. So it seems the sudo apittude did something good. Recently my computer is doing a lot of strange things. For example the sound just cuts out at times and I have go to Sound and turn it back on. And then this thing tonight where it jumped to a smaller resolution is making me nervous about my data safety. What is a freeware I can use to back-up my stuff, especially all my contacts in Thunderbird and things like that. Thanks for your help.

this morning when I booted up it went to the same problem...the resolution is 800 by 600, and I can't find or see hardly anything...I did manage to go to hardware drivers...and now it say I have no proprietary drivers on this system...I tried synaptic package manger but the screen is so I can't get around on it

I'm afraid I can't help with your main problem but it's worth knowing that if a window appears and because of your small screen it's partly off the screen, you can use Alt+left click drag to move the window back onto the screen.

It doesn't matter where you click in that window, the mouse pointer should change to a hand if you do it correctly.

Kind regards,
Jonathon

That's a cool tip. Thanks Jonathon, if I learn something I at least get something out of this misery.

Or Jonathon maybe you can help with this; now when I click to minimize something like Firefox it just disappears beyond the bottom of the monitor screen.
