14.04 LTS 64-bit - Cannot Adjust Screen Brightness

I am using an Acer Aspire 5742Z with Intel Ironlake Mobile listed as the graphics.

The slider to adjust screen brightness moves, but the actual screen brightness does not change.

How can I fix this? I've checked relevant threads and cannot find a solution.

Add the boot option:

acpi_osi=Linux
