Please don't give up on me guys - my daughter lost her baby after 2 days and the only pics on are this PC (I told her to back up). Any help please???

Not sure I understand the problem. Are the pictures most important? (Would be to me) Or the low graphics mode? Have you thought about taking pictures off, using USB drive. They will be way they were installed. Can see on other computers, also make more back ups. Even with low-graphics you should be able to download pictures to USB drive. Save pictures first, then get graphics fixed. Good luck.

The PC locks up after you continue in low graphics mode, I can get to the terminal OS screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 bu that's all I can do?! Or is it? Not a Ubuntu user, more of a Mac guy...

It never gets to that point even. After booting it shows the 'the system
is running in low graphics mode' screen, I press enter as the mouse isn't
showing. The next screen give 4 options:
* run in low graphics mode for just one session
* reconfigure graphics
* troubleshoot the error
* exit to console login

At this point I can't do anything apart from go to the command prompt.
I've located the pictures directory. What's the command line to copy all
the directories in pictures to my USB drive (named MD16GB)?

Press CTRL+ALT+F1 and log in there and run:

killall -u $USER

run it as is, do not change the command. You can then switch session and try there, is it ok?

Problem sorted. My IT guy has been in ( Linux god in my eyes :D ) and realised that the disk was full therefore not allowing Ubuntu to use virtual memory and was just 'stopping'. Deleted a couple of 3 Gb movie files and voila! All is well, thanks to everyone for all your help anyway.

You can further clear space by uninstalling old kernels as well as running:

sudo apt-get clean
