12.10 (3.5.0-18) display manager seems not to work; screens after login are messed up.

I just did a system update to 12.10(3.5.0-18). When I booted the loin screen was OK. When I
did a login, the first screen was graphically garbled, but Firefox and terminal screens were OK.
A restart produced a messed up login screen; another restart and not even Dell screen showed up.
A further shutoff and reboot got a good sartup and I'm back on 12.10(3.2.0-32) in which the
graphics appear to work well. My system is a Dell desktop with Intel chips.

Can this be fixed?

Uninstall the Nvidia driver then reboot to the newer kernel, then reinstall it
