Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS problems booting and running

Asked by Kerry Hall

Hi Vancouver Loco! And other folks too!

Ubuntu 10.04 used to work just fine , but now I have only major problems with Ubuntu 12.04 since upgrading. I've re-installed it twice now. Most recently, two days ago I re-installed with 12.04.1 LTS, I overwrote the whole harddrive by installing from a boot CD.

This hasn't solved my problems:

-computer won't boot properly, e.g. no screen image at all or totally unclear screen images with funny boxes and horizontal squiggy lines

-if it does manage to boot, it doesn't run well, e.g. it's slow or the screen image starts to degrade with artifacts showing up (like squiggy lines) or it freezes all together

I'm not sure what to do since I've done a fresh install as well as dowloaded any updates.

Your help is appreciated!

What video chip do you use?
Does the system have a make and model?

It's an NVIDIA card: NV43 GeForce 6800 GS.

It's got an Asus P4P800 motherboard, 2.4 GHz, 2 MB RAM.
