nvidia video card resolution issues

Asked by Altomm09

I understand that the nvidia drivers are not proprietary. But I cannot seem to get the resolution correct. When I install the drivers I change the resolution to 1024x768 and the screen stays 480 and I have to move the mouse around to move the screen. I have activated each of the two drivers that are provided. And the one that is recommended by linux developers doesn't work either. Not to mention that this problem has developed on two completely different machines. Is there a setting I am missing? Here is the card info:
*-display
                description: VGA compatible controller
                product: G73 [GeForce 7300 GT]
                vendor: nVidia Corporation
                physical id: 0
                bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0
                version: a1
                width: 64 bits
                clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
                configuration: driver=nouveau latency=0
                resources: irq:16 memory:e0000000-e0ffffff memory:d0000000-dfffffff memory:e1000000-e1ffffff ioport:c000(size=128) memory:e2000000-e201ffff

I cannot change the visual effects until I get this driver configured correctly or what ever must be done.
Thanks

You are still using the open source nouveau driver.

Did you reboot after activating the driver?

Which ever basic driver that was installed with Ubuntu is in play.

First I was using the basic driver at 1024x768.

Second I let ubuntu install the proprietary drivers. Rebooted. And the resolution was 640x480. Adjusted the resolution to 1024x768. Reboot. Then the display was 640x480 and the desktop was 1024x768. I needed to move the mouse around to move the display around the desktop. So I changed to the other nvidia driver in the provided list. Reboot.

Same results as before. So I deactivated the nvidia drivers and got my 1024x768 display back.

What command line can I use to find out what driver is currently in use?

try:

sudo nvidia-xconfig

then reboot, maybe your monitor sucks and isnt reporting refresh rates, the command will make an xorg.conf file and define some simple refresh rates.

Can you help with this problem?
