dist-upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 fails

Asked by Tony van der Hoff

Towards the end of the install, KpackageKit pops up an error window:
Error during commit 'E:Couldn't configure pre-depend x-11-common for x11-xkb-utils, probably a dependency cycle.' Restoring original system state.

This doesn't appear to be a known bug; can anyone advise me of how to proceed from here?

Ok, thanks for the heads-up.

I applied the suggestions from gwitt, but now see the following message:

Calculating upgrade... Failed
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
  libdrm-nouveau1: Breaks: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (< 1:0.0.16) but 1:0.0.15+git20100219+9b4118d-0ubuntu5 is to be installed
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

Well, I appear to have sorted the problem by clearing the module cache, and repeating the dist-upgrade.

I am now running averick.
