You can try the alpha1 http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/maverick/alpha1

by yourself by downloading and burning desired iso image from here http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/maverick/alpha-1/

and then try to run without installing.

Also you can update to the current daily version using this link http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/
Please use the .zsync protocol to get a differential fast download from alpha1 to current daily live.

install the zsync package

Here the command to run in a terminal, to have the iso image downloaded.

Please activate the universe section first, using the menu System→Administration→Software sources.

Then using a terminal type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bittornado zsync

mkdir $HOME/maverick
cd $HOME/maverick
wget http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/maverick/alpha-1/maverick-desktop-i386.iso.torrent
btlaunchmanycurses

wait the download of iso image...

Then after burn on a cd and tried this alpha1, you can also upgrade the alpha1 to current release by typing (you can do this command every day or when you want to update the .iso file to the current daily release):

cd $HOME/maverick; zsync http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/maverick-desktop-i386.iso.zsync

Obviously you can test the daily build by burning it or using a virtualbox virtual machine...

hey raymond plz try downloading the iso file of 10.10 maverik and run it without installing
i found that there areno crashes as alpha1 has much improvement than 10.04
and plz check u mail

Ok good to listen, was i try to suggest you in my previous answer, try yourself with live cd, i use Ubuntu 10.10 but i have not the hardware to test... ;-)

Many thanks to priyank and marcobra for responding on this. My situation is that I am having the freezing problem on 9.10; when I originally went to 10.4, the problem I had was the screen going randomly black with no response so had to turn off at power supply. At this time I do not have the time (or inclination) to go to 10.10 although I understand from several sources that this does solve the problem. After a period back on 9.04, I am now on 9.10 - the problem is far less severe now with only a few random freezes. In a couple of weeks I am getting a brand new 64 bit computer which I hope will be problem free with 10.4. My point is that I wish to be able to just install and use Ubuntu but it is clear that many people with these i8XX chipsets are having major problems. Look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8XXfreezes where it is obvious that this was a known problem at 10.4 release but very few people asking for help get referred to it where several workaround solutions are given. Perhaps I should have read the release notes! I am now going to wait for the new computer to arrive, when I am also going to put a NVIDIA graphics card into one of my computers which has an Intel 845/GM chipset and see what happens. If I still get problems, at least I now have several solutions to hand including going to 10.10 which is now not far away. Maybe I will email you from my new computer and let you know how I get on!!
