Graphics Driver + Resolution
AMD 690G . ATI SB600 . ATI Radeon X1250-based graphics . Ubuntu 12.10
New user to Linux, problems with screen resolution, "Displays" says "Unknown" even though I've ran Mesa-Utils.
xrandr -q reports;
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA-0 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm

Note the; "8192 X 8192" Maximum
lspci reports;

I've two of these motherboards (Asus M2A-VM), Windows 8 allows screen resolution for;
1600 X 1200, 1400 X 1050, 1280 X 1024, 1152 X 864 above 1024 X 768
I've tried forcing a greater resolution above 1024 X 768 which of course fails... ("xrandr -s" - "Only 4 choices")
Ran Mesa-Utils and was able to get "Gallium 0.4 on ATI RS690" instead of "Graphics Unknown" for "About this Computer" but, NOT in "Displays" in the "Control Panel"
Still appears there is yet some other driver I could use, there are "Radeon" Xserver-Xorg files installed with this version (12.10 Quatal Quetzal), I've yet to figure out which one MIGHT be my resolution or even how to use them...
Any help is appreciated...

thery're text files , look for something suspicuse and related to your GPU driver .
you may wish to paste the log here using a paste service, so that someone might help you examine the logs with you .

Notice that "-- newmode" put the NEW setting under "DVI-0" and NOT "VGA-0", there doesn't appear to be a way to force it to VGA-0. Looked like it should work... The "-- addmode" was an incorrect syntax error basically and therefore gave me the help instructions for the command.

Ok, "User Error" on my part, kept playing with it, have it now. Will it be there on a reboot? Thought I saw something about putting it into a start script, which I cannot find now...
Also, Display says unknown, Anyone know of a "Viewsonic" [VA2431WM] Open driver? The Viewsonic page has it for "Win" only...

It appears that the settings will NOT work based on my last post of the "Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors".
I've been forced to reload (twice) as the "XML" file could NOT be found to remove the error message. Using the method so far will cause the error message, I tried it again on the 1st reload, after rebooting, the message appeared. Seems to me that a drivers for both the card and the display are needed.
I DID find a "Radeon" folder, but, my lack of training with Linux means I still cannot figure out how to use it or if it is already being used.
BTW, I did find the files for "FGLRX" forcing me yet again to reload as they must be for a laptop (that is what the System Settings for Display said) and I had no unity bar and a blank desktop.
So it is back to the drawing board and the search is on for a driver, the previous information should be very useful when the drivers are found (if such exists).

Corky : your system is already using the Radeon open source drive .
if you look at the #configuration line: from the output of " lshw -C video " , and the lsmod output .. it stated the drive name as " radeon "is loaded and being in use .

maybe you could try with the driver RadeonHD ! but not quite sure how will would that turn out. and if seen few complains with this driver about audi issues!
as for fglrx , i don't see it loaded, you may wish to check again running lsmod , and see if fglrx is set there .. if you think it's interrupting with open source driver .. you could always remove it running the proper script and then with apt-get -- purge as follow :
sudo sh /usr/share/
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*
you could also use modeprop to load drivers and unload with rmmod
# for installing driver form an sh script , you just need to cd to the correct dir /path that contain the sh script and then inside it , run
sudo sh installerfilena
# if you're plaining on installing switching between drivers , always remember to reconfigure xserver and xorx , running :
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
then ..
sudo reboot

Scratch that , don't try the HD driver or any other as there is a big chance of making things worse!
Try this setup with these steps :
while the monitor is attached , obtian the correct information for your monitor form X.org last logs in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
look for the modeline and replace the informations with the following lines , as explained on this link :

then, for example .. run the commands as root - sudo
# xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_
# xrandr --addmode VGA-0 "1920x1080_
# xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode "1920x1080_
