Notification: "WindowTitle" is now ready - why does it say that?

Asked by Michael Berg

From time to time when I launch a program or in some other ways cause a window to be opened, Ubuntu does not show me the new window. In stead, a black notification rolls up from the bottom of the screen saying "WindowTitle is now ready". WindowTitle being of course the name of the new window. I then have to either click the notification or alt-tab until I can see the window.

Why does Ubuntu do this? I find it quite annoying. Why does it show me the notification in stead of the new window? Is this supposed to be useful?

It sounds like you're referring to a feature of Gnome Shell. It's an interface that is available in Ubuntu but made by a group called Gnome. http://gnome.org/

In my experience, it happens if I've switched to another window before the application starts. That's normally if it takes a little while longer than expected to open, so it's just a little message saying that it's opened, without popping the window over what you're doing. I suspect a lot of people would prefer the notification, but your opinion is of course understandable.

Perhaps an extension could be made to change the behaviour, but I don't have the skills to do that myself. Here's the website for Gnome Shell extensions. https://extensions.gnome.org/

You could report it as a bug to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/ (that's the best place for Gnome Shell bugs to be reported) if you like, but I expect them to call the notifications a feature.

@Alan:

Thanks for your help, I'll try posting to bugzilla.gnome.org.

As for the actual notification, I don't quite see how anyone would want this behaviour. You start a program or open a window, and then you're sitting there waiting for the window to appear. But it doesn't. A notification appears in stead and you have to click that notification to get to see the window you were waiting for in the first place. It seems like an unnecessary step to me.

It seems there is already an extension that solves my problem:

THANKS A LOT ALAN! :-)
