What to do with downloaded driver to my video card?

Asked by Erik Arne

I have downloaded a xorg driver "savage.4" which should match my video card, but don't know how to install it.
(I have read FAQs and checked the "restricted driver manager" in the Systems menu, but the frame is empty. I have also checked in the Add/Remove Programs for "Savage drive" and "s3 drive" with no results.)

You need to use synaptic package manager, not the add/remove programs feature. (system>administration>synaptic package manager) be sure "all" is selected in the left dialog panel. type "savage" into the search bar. the driver should come up

Thanks for your assistance Patrick. I searched for "savage" in the synaptic package manager and these four items showed up as already being installed:
s3 swich
xserver-xorg-video-s3
xserver-xorg-video-s3 virge
xserver-xorg-video-savage

When I searched for the name of the downloaded package on my desktop "savage.4" it came up in the left hand frame below "All" but when selected the main right hand frame remained empty and nothing else could be selected.

The reason why I tried to install the driver in the first place is that I can't start up SketchUp5 in Wine. When I try the following message appears: "SketchUp was unable to initialize OpenGL! Please make sure you have installed the correct drives for your graphics card. Error: Choose Pixel Format failed."

My card is "s3 Inc.86c270-294 Savage/IX-MV(rev 11)

The driver xserver-xorg-video-s2 is listed in Synaptic as installed and listed as the only one available for Hardy Heron, which is the version I run.

I just want to pass on an advice I got in the forum "Ubuntu Sverige" to visit "http://wiki.winehq.org/GoogleSketchup" where the solution to my problem is to be found:
"bug 14045: If you get the error "SketchUp was unable to initialize OpenGL!], run regedit, open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\SketchUp6\GLConfig\Display, and change HW_OK to 1."
And it works, although the advice is aimed at nvidia cards. Magic!
