Asked by mistaboins

i get this message when i try the fix mentioned :
Package displayconfig-gtk is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
is there another source?

In fiesty it is located in the universe repository.

In gutsy or hardy it is located in the standard repository and can be installed from the terminal

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install displayconfig-gtk

If you are using intrepid this package is not supported. Then to get better help please provide the output of this command from the terminal

lspci | grep -i vga

Hope this helps

AFAIK displayconfig-gtk is removed from intrepid.

run

applications -> other -> Screens and graphics

or look under

System > Preferences > Screen Resolution

and manually select the resolution

Quite. displayconfig-gtk is gone and applications->other->Screens and graphics merely points at that. Has this function been replaced in Intrepid, or do we have to go back to hacking the conf file?

Maybe I can help, but I don't know what the original problem is! Please explain what you are trying to do.

Have you tried to enable the drivers for your graphics card. Please check in System-> Administration-> Hardware Drivers.

Hopefully, there will be a driver listed there that you can enable. The xorg.conf files has largely been deprecated in intrepid so xorg.conf hacks may not be able to solve this problem.

Also it appears you have two graphics cards an integrated Intel and an ATI card. I assume you are using the ATI card.

If it helps, I had a similar problem in Hardy: the monitor wasn't detected because it wasn't there - I was using VNC. Using displayconfig-gtk I ended up with the xorg.conf file which follows. This one has since been modified by the upgrade to 8.10, but it still works for me on a pretty ordinary CRT display. I've commented out the reference to my video card, and you may need the Driver "vesa" line if your video card is not properly detected. If you have a LCD, some of the timings may not work, or may even be dangerous! I read that someone else has re-installed Hardy, generated this sort of xorg.conf file for his monitor/video and then copied it back into Intrepid.

Back up /etc/X11/xorg.conf and copy the following in there as a new xorg.conf and re-boot. Good luck.

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

# commented out by update-manager, HAL is now used
