Graphics problem? with ubuntu 8.04

Asked by Raman

I recently upgraded from ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 thru the ubuntu web site.( Not CD or iso). After the installation I could not start on normal mode - only in fail safe Gnome or terminal. If this problem cannot be solved, I would like to reinstal 7.10. I have the CD. Can I instal 7.10 over 8.04?

Sounds like you just need to re-install your graphics driver. The upgrade you performed includes a new kernel so reinstallation is required so that the graphics modules can be built against the new kernel.

To reset your xorg.conf file so that you do not need to login under failsafe.

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.backup
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Then you can reinstall your drivers through 1 these 3 methods

ubuntu restricted drivers
proprietary manufacturers drivers
envy-gtk

If you wish to reinstall 7.10 I would recommend backing-up your /home. Reinstalling 7.10 will wipeout out everything on your root partition. After reinstalling you copy your /home back so you can maintain all you configurations and settings.

Can you help with this problem?
