nVidia Vga driver issue

Asked by spooky_267

I am new to Linux, so please make the steps as clear as possible.
I have a vga card nVidia Geforce 9800, the problem is I don't know if it is installed correctly by Ubuntu or not, I think it isn't as I have a very low screen resolution and when I tried to change it, I only found 2 options either 640*480 or 800*600 !!
Also the Ubuntu visual effects can't be enabled, I don't know why
When I enter system --> Administration --> Hardware Drivers, It only lists my vga card : NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (latest card)

you should have a button towards the bottom of that Hardware Drivers window above the "help" and "close" buttons.
what does that say when the * (latest card) is highlighted as orange.

[sorry its been a while since my last fresh install]

You video card is not yet supported the restricted drivers in ubuntus repositories.

You will have to manually install the drivers in order to get them to work on your machine. The latest NVIDIA driver released on October 7th, just added support for the NVIDIA 9800 card.

You can get the 177.80 driver from here
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_177.80.html

A community document with instructions for installing the driver manually is here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual

If you run into problems because of previous attempts to install a driver. Starcannons guide in thread #6 may be useful.

Thanks, luckily Ubuntu suggested the solution itself.
