8.10 X11 dualhead configuration failure

Asked by SEWilco

I did an upgrade from Hardy Heron to 8.10 release candidate.

While trying to configure X11 Windows on my dual-headed (two monitor) system I got a message saying that I'd have to use low graphics mode due to the following error:

(EE) MGA(0): Unable to map BAR 0. Invalid argument (22)

The video card is a PCI MGA G400/G450.

The system seems to be functional in low graphics mode with a single monitor.

On a related note, I'm not finding a menu option for reconfiguring X, so after the problem is solved I'm not seeing a user interface way to trigger the reconfiguration process. This might also cause problems for someone who adds or replaces a monitor and needs to reconfigure. (I can edit the configuration files, but triggering reconfiguration would probably help many people.)

I have the same problem with my MGA G550. In Ubuntu 8.04 everything works ok.

This seems to be a bug in the MGA driver / Xserver code. Basically, dual head support on these MGA cards in now broken.

See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-mga/+bug/292214

There is no simple end-user solution yet. Sorry. If you feel comfortable patching source code, the patches are in the bug report above. Otherwise, if you know how to, you can apparently re-install the Xorg distribution from Hardy as a work-around.

Can you help with this problem?
