HDMI display failure in 13.10

I've been using an HDMI chord to connect my laptop (samsung R522) to the TV with Windows and it hasn't had problems, but once I tried this with Ubuntu, I experienced what seems to be a bug:
when the connection happens, only the home screen (and mouse movement) of my pc appears on the TV, no other application or function displays.
I found no answers about this on the internet, so I'm assuming this is a new error?

Andrew, unfortunately I have no idea what you're getting at here, but thank you for your help anyway.

I'm completely switched to Ubuntu right now, and it has System Settings, which has. . . nothing on output device settings, there isn't even a single download in the Software Center related to HDMI. If it wasn't showing anything at all it be one thing, but the fact that it's still relaying my background and mouse moving around is just confusing... I thought HDMI completely mirrored screen display.

Ahh I thought you were dual booting. If you run:

sudo lshw -C display

What do you see as the product line?

Hdmi can mirror or extend displays as well as be the only screen.

Use the additional driver application in the system settings. Will help

It says
no additional drivers are available
and
no proprietary drivers are in use on this system,
though the system did download some sort of a package with a bunch of miscellaneous drivers.
Am I supposed to run or configure something specific?
