Ubuntu 17.04 64 bit vmware guest install, most of screen hidden

Asked by Sam Bailey

I am attempting to install Ubuntu Budgie 17.04 64-bit as a virtual machine on VMWare Workstation 12. The installation is proceeding normally, but the screen resolution is very small, leaving most of the Ubuntu desktop hidden. This means that I cannot get to the menu. I need to change the screen resolution to regain the rest of the screen real estate, but even right clicking the desktop brings up only allows me to access a few unrelated settings.

If I can't change the screen size, I'll have to give up on using the OS.

I've had a similar issue when installing another distro (xubuntu) but all I had to do is right click, and easily accessed the settings to change screen resolution. I'm not understanding why that doesn't seem to be possible in this particular situation.

If you can help me to fix this, I'll really appreciate your assistance. BTW I did search on this site for similar queries, and couldn't find any that fit my situation exactly... hence this question.

Thank you in advance.

By the way, I should have added that while I'm not an absolute Linux newbie and have experimented with a lot of different distros, highly technical answers assuming that I know the terminal inside and out are likely not to be understood by me. I can follow directions, but if it's highly technical, I just need it to be a bit more detailed, and step-by-step. Thanks.
