X server not starting on LG P1 PRO Express Dual laptop

Did you install or the error is running Live Cd ?

Did you try with the safe graphic mode ?

running live CD.

I tried the safe graphics mode and had the same problem.

Also downloaded the 64 bit version and it also struck the same problem.

If you scroll through the log file, you'll find quite a few lines starting with "(EE)". These are error messages. Could you provide us the lines?

From the log file:

(EE) VESA(0): No matching modes
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
Fatal server erro:
no server found f"

in the 'detailed server output' - Seems to find the VESA and then try each mode.
For each mode had a message similar to:

"(II) VESA(0): Not using built in mode "640X480" (h_sync out of range).

My assumption is that it has something to do with the fact that the PC has a widescreen monitor?

I am not able to provide a dump of the log, some of the info from the 'detailed server output' log:

It might have something to do with the resolution, for sure it has something to do with the vesa driver and the ati card.

In my opinion, we will not be able to get the live cd working. The easyiest way would be to try an alternative install (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/, click "alternate desktop install") and installing the ati drivers after that (see method 1 at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Feisty_Installation_Guide).

Downloaded the 'alternate desktop install' and loaded it.

Had same problem but after some searching on the web, ran:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Accepted everything except selected VESA with native resolution.

Graphics then worked.

Tried to activate 'restricted driver' but wouldn't work until I disabled the CDROM flag in the 'System/Administration/Software Sources menu item. Installation kept getting hung up looking for what appears to be phantom CD drive?

Graphics now work!

If anyone able to help, 2 subsequent problems:

1. Sound driver seems to be the correct one for my hardware (00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)). Sound seems to work through the headphone socket but does not work on the built in speakers?

2. Wireless network started up seamlessly - terrific! However, although I have Icons up to show other PCs on a Windows share, cannot open them up. I get the message: "The folder contents could not be displayed -- Sorry couln't display all of the contents of ...." . Note that there have been shares set up on the other PC and works under windows and WAS working in Ubuntu (I had to re-install after 'breaking' Ubuntu in my experimentation).
