Xorg-server fails at startup. Msg:setup failed

Asked by subsailor

Due to a Display failure I was forced to use the Stop/Start button to shutdown and correct the problem. When I restarted Xorg config failed.
When I looked at the Log file it indicated that the setup had failed because of the config file had a problem.
I went to the xorg.wiki on line and discovered that work had tried to establish a method to recreate the xorg config file. I followed the instructions and created the ...config.new file. I have been using linux for at least 20 years and amazing tools very seldom work as advertised for me.

I do applaud the developers on this tool concept. As a software engineer for 35 years (retired) I would be looking at making the tool way more automated.

Oh yes! I still have not been able to recreate an xorg config file that works. The errors I have encountered are "to many devices of the type in the devices list" after review it appeared to me that it would probably be the display devices. I'm a home user and there is only one display. After this attempt another type of error stops the new file being created that is "Segmentation fault" at some hex location, which I could not locate.

I would like to have this work as reloading from scratch would leave me with a nightmare of data problems.

Thanks for the help. I'll be watching my email.

If you rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf then udev will detect the hardware.

Can you help with this problem?
