Ubuntu is not compatible with My HP printer so i have chosen to install windows xp on my computer I am having trouble installing the Operating system off of the CD because it is an exe I am currently battling with Wine and do not no where to go from here.

That is almost certainly not the case. HP is enthusiastically
supportive of providing Linux support for all HP printers. If that's
the only reason you are installing Windows, there are better ways to
accomplish the task.

Installing hplip via Synaptic should provide all the drivers you need.
I've never seen or heard of an HP printer that hplip didn't support.
It was written by HP, and Just works.

That said, there are instances when you need or want Windows for some
reason or another. (Having a hammer doesn't make every problem a
nail.)

However, you won't be able to install Windows using Wine. You'll need
to set up either a dual boot environment or a virtual machine. There
are some tutorials available for how to use both approaches. If you
can't find one via the usual googling and searching the ubuntu sites,
let us know.

For many of my assignments I need to have them in Microsoft office format. My major frustration with Ubuntu is that I have not been able to print and that i have not mastered Microsoft office with Ubuntu. I will try the hplip now but I am still in the dark as far as installing Microsoft office from a cd rom the exe file is not compatible. Is there some sort of general tutorial video that reviews such common problems? Any information is greatly appreciated.

Some suggestions:

1. OpenOffice can save in .doc format if you need this.
2. For info about getting Office 2003 and Office 2007 working with Wine you should check http://wine-review.blogspot.com/. (He's got them both working)

It is possible to install MS Office using Wine, but not many people do
because reading and writing MS Office format is available via
OpenOffice. Indeed one of the major benefits of OpenOffice is that it
is able to read and write to MS Office AND the OpenDocument standard,
which the ISO has adopted at the international standard.

To save a document into MS Office format, use Save As, and select the
format to which you want to save the file.

You can also tell OpenOffice to automatically save to .doc, .xls, and
.ppt formats by clicking on Tools > Options > Load/Save > Microsoft
Office.

The only real reason that I know of to use MSOffice itself is if you
need to run macros (most likely in Excel). However, the macro language
in MSOffice is extremely vulnerable to hacking and malware, so you
should take extra precautions. Fortunately, the Linux environment is
itself a measure of protection against most of the malware in MSOffice
documents, but an insecure application like MS Office does create
holes in the security fortress that Linux has built.

It sounds as if you are relatively new to the Ubuntu/Linux experience,
so a detailed tutorial of how to install MSOffice is probably not
going to help you much. My suggestion is to buy a copy of the
Codeweavers CrossOver Linux application, which is essentially a
souped-up Wine. For $40, you will save yourself much aggravation and
will end up with a more seamless experience. Besides, Codeweavers is
the principal sponsor of Wine, so you will be investing in the future
of interoperability.

I have downloaded multiple drivers to help with my printer problem and when i use synaptic package manager the packages are already installed but i am still unable to print do you have any ideas?

I have downloaded the hplip driver in hope for a solution but i keep getting an error saying that "got bad file info" If I can get this printer working I will keep Ubuntu and not give in to the devil that is XP. help!

We can help, but you have to get more information, because we can't see what you see on the screen, and we don't know what state your machine is in. The following is some of the information we'd need:

Which model of HP printer do you have?
Exactly how are you trying to print? I.e., are you printing from OpenOffice, Firefox, etc.?
What application gives you the error message? What else does it say?
What steps have you already taken to set up the printer?
Is the printer showing up in the list of printers in System > Administration > Printers
When you say that you have downloaded drivers, which drivers are you talking about and where did you get them?

Perhaps I'm misreading what you wrote, but I get the impression that you are downloading drivers from HP or other places on the internet, which is what you would do in Windows. In Ubuntu, you don't do it that way should do everything through the APT system. (Synaptic is a graphical front end for the APT system.) There are a few isolated instances where drivers have to be converted from other formats, but I've never heard of an HP printer that needs that.

Here's a couple of other options
HP drivers are based on PCL, so you can always fall back to installing the printer and use the generic PCL6 driver.
HP printers are Postscript compliant, so you can use the generic postscript driver.

The generic drivers sometimes don't implement all the bells and whistles of your printer, but if you just want to print, they just work.
