How to update BIOS

Asked by Tadhg McSherry

There is a new BIOS program available for my Dell Inspiron 1720 but it is a .exe file. I have it downloaded to my download file on my Ubuntu 11.04 which is now on this laptop. How do I update this??

First of all, go back to the Dell website and see if you can find an Ubuntu specific Bios update. Dell supports Ubuntu so it's a possibility.

If no specific file is available you'll need to install a program like wine that is able to run windows .exe files. Make sure you go into the file properties > permissions and tick allow executing file as program before trying to run it.

I've never done this myself, but did look into the process. If the exe is a dos executable, get a freedos iso and using unetbootin, create a dos bootable usb stick. Add the exe program to the stick, and boot the dos usb. Then flash the MB. Get more exact instructions from Google and the Dell web site.
