Visit http://www.winehq.org/
It has information (and a package of the Windows API) on runnig Windows programs on many Linux distributions.

...but of course you could spend some time looking for a free alternative. Are you trying to get a particular piece of software running or are you just asking a general question?

Hi BrotherG,
You should really open up your own support ticket instead of hijacking other peoples. You can do that here: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+addticket

There is an install guide on the Ubuntu help site: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

For Java, go here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Do NOT install Java using Wine. Sun JRE runs perfectly fine natively.

I installed a windows app called A9CAD under Linux using Wine. This produced a Wine desktop configuration file called A9CAD.desktop in the /root directory. I opened Krusader and then double clicked this file. The program started OK but the open file dialog box was all screwed up. I opened Krusader in root mode and tried again. This time it worked flawlessly but when I tried it again it would not load. I rebooted and it worked OK again.
I would like to add this program to the Drop-Down Application menu. Can I Do This? Andf can I correct the problem of having to be root to start it?

Can you help with this problem?
