to install vlc media player

it is asking to remove another software which is conflicting to vlc.............in
synaptic manager....................but iam new to ubuntu and cannot proceed
further............please help me

Can you let us know what it wants to remove? If it's another video player that is normal. There are a couple that are not compatible. If you want VLC just let it remove the other player (might be something xine). If you are not sure what it is then just paste the name or other output here.

Using System->Administration->Software sources [Ubuntu software] please enable all the repositories.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade
sudo aptitude install totem

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.
