vlc doesn't play properly after upgrade to 12.04

every so often, about 2-5 minutes on the average, there is a sound jump: i.e. the sound falls out very briefly. Associated with this is a gradual build up in the synchronization of voice to video, with the voice lagging behind. There is no such problem on my other video players.

try closing VLC, renaming ~/.config/vlc then rerun the app.
