Why are you not simply installing vlc using Ubuntu Software Center?

I am using the following version in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS:

VLC media player 2.0.1 Twoflower (revision 2.0.1-0-gf432547)

So why are you trying to compile an old version of vlc? (v1.1.12)

Which version of Ubuntu are you using?

Well, in that case, I suggest following this installation procedure:

Maybe the site was temporarily down? It works right now for me....

Please visit this URL using a webbrowser instead of using an Email client:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+question/203688

Then click on this link using a webbrowser:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware#Installing_packages_without_an_Internet_connection

It should work....

Yes, indeed, the following URL

https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/add-applications/C/offline.html

points to a page that does not exist anymore, but all the information after that URL does work.

Please just skip the part about

https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/add-applications/C/offline.html

and try keryx, Synaptic/PackageDownloadScript or apt-offline instead.

There are several possible solutions. You only need one of them.....

In the meantime, I have removed the reference to that invalid URL on the following page:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware

Can you help with this problem?
