virtualbox-guest-dkms not found for 21.10

Asked by J Pad

To setup a virtualbox GUI VM, is virtualbox-guest-dkms necessary for Ubuntu 21.10? Has virtualbox-guest-dkms been replaced for 21.10?

Sorry, I intended my question for Ubuntu 21.10, not 22.10. Question has been corrected.

Ubuntu 21.10 does not have the package virtualbox-guest-dkms (https://packages.ubuntu.com/impish/allpackages). It does have the slightly distinct package virtualbox-dkms.

I installed virtualbox from Oracle : https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
The Ubuntu 21.04 is the same for 22.10.It is the same as installing from Ubuntu Repository.

Thanks for responding.

I can use Vagrant to have Virtualbox successfully launch “bento/ubuntu-20.04” (https://app.vagrantup.com/bento/boxes/ubuntu-20.04). Before seeing the desktop GUI, the following APT packages are installed: ubuntu-desktop-minimal, virtualbox-guest-x11 and virtualbox-guest-dkms.

I tried the same for “bento/ubuntu-21.10”, except with virtualbox-guest-dkms replaced with virtualbox-dkms. However, it was not successful.

I have since successfully employed Vagrant to launch a Virtualbox GUI VM with “bento/ubuntu-22.04”. I accomplished this with a minimal GUI configuration, which was having just the gdm3 and xfce4 apt packages installed. It seems the issue I was encountering was not due to a missing APT package. Rather, it was due to the Virtualbox VM display settings. In particular, the graphics controller was set to VMSVGA and Remote Display was disabled.
