Problem in activation of insert mode in vi-editor

I am using ubunto 10.10.I have faced a problem while i was trying to write a c-program in vi-editor.The problem is I cannot activate the insert mode by pressing the key 'i'.Please tell me how can I activate the insert mode in vi editor.

Try installing the full vim.

sudo aptitude install vim

By default ubuntu ships with a stripped down version of vim called vim-tiny
