total deletion of thumb drive

I "moved to trash" all my files on my 2 G thumb drive but could not add more as it said it was full. When I mounted said drive in a Windows machine, it showed a file of all that I had deleted. I deleted this file and freed up the whole drive. Why was this file not visible in my Ubuntu 12.04.1?

That file wasn't visible in Ubuntu because it is hidden by default.
Other time when you delete files/folders from an external HDD, BEFORE you unmount the HDD go to Ubuntu's trash and clean it. Then it should be OK.
When you delete a file/folder from an external device this is not deleted permanently from the HDD. Instead, a trash folder INSIDE HDD is generated to host all the deleted files/folders. This trash folder is connected with Ubuntu's trash folder, so when you clean the Ubuntu's trash folder, the HDD's trash will also be cleaned up. BUT the HDD MUST be mounted.
