can not move file over 4gb, `error splicing file'

when i try to move files over 4gb. from `videos' to ext. drive get msg `error splicing file, too large'

What file system does the external partition use? Is it FAT32 by any chance?

If the filesystem of the external drive is FAT32 then you cannot move a file larger than 4GB (not supported by the filesystem).

You have to convert the filesystem to NTFS , you can do that without lose any data .

READ CAREFULLY and APPLY COMMANDS CAREFULLY .. BE CAREFUL with the LETTER of the DRIVE.

Of course the above method can be applied ONLY FROM WINDOWS Operating System.

No, FAT32 has a file size limit of 4Gb. It will do the same in ANY OS.

Is the file system FAT32?

hello all you super friendly helper people, as one of the million do do's out here i thank you.
Innitially hoped to find answer in archives but slipped up somewhere? hence first interaction with real people. Turns out ext. drive is fat32 and funny thing, files were going over, just without image i had placed over folder. Only noticed after much frustration having believed msg that they had not. Since found file splicing tool in software centre so will not be fooled again(ha) Have reinstalled 12.04 along side 12.04 and am now learning how to retrieve files from another partition (something like that) I can see the buggers so should be able to get 'em.
Without you people the world would be much worse off, thx. Wayne.
