When you plug in the USB device, an icon should pop up on you desktop with the device's name. If you Right-click on the icon, a dropdown list should pop up, and from that list you can select 'safely remove' (or 'unmount' or 'eject').
Alternatively, you can unmount the device manually. You can find instructions about mounting/unmounting devices here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB
