Can't install cdrom drives. Have been searching, researching for 2months now

When you go to System Settings * Disk Utility you do not see your CD/DVD drives. I am not a programmer. I have loaded Ubuntu 7. up to 11.04, and have never had this problem. Have seen many times, people not having Ubuntu Restricted Extras installed. From Ubuntu Software Center. Check to see if drives are there, and Restricted Extras, is installed. If drives are not there, you will need help with mounting drives. Not my best thing, others will have to help.

Yeah, with the research I had found about the restricted extras & installed them, it didn't help much. The CD/DVD Rom is now showing up but still refuses to play or register anything in the Drive. have since upgraded to 11.04 & now things have gone from bad to worse. Now I have a music disc stuck in the drive & it refuses to eject. Have tried restarting the OS, to no avail. Even my wife's account has major issues since the upgrade & we now have to force the shutdown as once she has logged in it wont let us restart or shutdown. Then I tried accessing User Accounts to delete her account & then attempt to make her a new account, but when I try opening User Account settings, it refuses to open. When I first started using Ubuntu we were both very impressed & were going to make Ubuntu our primary OS, now am starting to wish I never went near it. Please help before I lose my mind & throw the Laptop out of the window. The Laptop is a Asus M51Vr 64bit.

Sorry you are having so much trouble. As for the stuck CD, there should be a small hole, close to CD tray. Straighten a paper clip, gently push straight into hole, will open CD tray. Hole should be to right and below the eject button.
Did you upgrade from 10.04 or 10.10? There is a possibility the download is corrupted. Do you have a Live CD or USB of 10.04 or 10.10?

This site will also show how to make a LiveUSB. You may have to save files to usb drive. (backup) and reinstall Ubuntu, using LiveUSB. The reason I use LiveCD-USB is so I can check with MD5sum.

Read both sites, let me know if you got CD out, and the two questions. The Live CD USB may seem like a lot of trouble, but is simple when you do it.

It's all fixed now. Have bought & installed a new DVD R/RW which started working almost immediately. Then re-installed windows 7 64 bit & added the old DVD R/RW in an USB slimline case which worked & have deleted Ubuntu from Hard-drive. No more issues since.
