how to install new Western Digital my Book Essential external HD?

all software included is for windows or macs. I was told at staples that I should be able to install on my Dell Inspiron 530
Ubuntu 10.04
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8200@2.66GHz. Not totally new beginner but need help with this problem!

Sorry for double post...

You don't need any special software for your external disk (is this an usb disk)...

Please connect the usb disk and please open a terminal and type:

lsusb

please copy the result here...

Please look into the Places menu... and check if your external device is listed, then double click on the icon to access to it.

I contacted Western Digital and was told they have no external drives that are compatible with Ubuntu 10.10. Does anybody have advice as to what will work. In the $70 - 80 range that will be installable on my DELL Inspiron 530? mostly in the 500GB for backup and store jpgs on.
