Source files to create a start-up USB startup disk

Asked by andrew2010

Where in the file system (on my laptop) can I find the source files for creating a start-up disk? I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 (I don't want to install from the CD that has Ubuntu 8)

I'm not completely sure what you are looking to do, but Ubuntu comes with a utility to turn a USB drive into a start-up disk. It can be found by going to System->Administration->USB Start-up Disk Creator.

I'm using the USB start-up Disk Creator utility. There is a dialog that asks for the source: "Source disc image (.iso) or CD: Please insert a CD or select 'Other'...." I can browse for 'Other' but I need to know what folder or files I'm looking for.

Ok. Now I understand. How big is the USB drive you are using? If it over 700MB, you can use the newest Ubuntu CD image. You can download the ISO from here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Then simply select the ISO that you've downloaded in order to make the USB start-up disk.

This is good. Is there any way to get the image directly off my laptop, which has the latest updates?

There may be a way to create the image from the files on your laptop. However, I sincerely doubt it is worth the work since it would first be necessary to identify all the files necessary for creating a boot disk and then making them into an ISO. There is no single file on your drive currently that can be used to create the boot disk and the ISO would likely take quite a bit of work to create. While the download of the ISO takes a while depending on your collection, something tells me it is still faster than trying to do this manually. However, that being said, I can try looking around for directions for making an ISO from the files on your disk if you really want to go that route.
