New Ubuntu 10.10 install freezes at bootup

I just finished creating a USB key (after formatting it to FAT32) to boot my Acer Aspire 1 netbook. now creating the disk with usb-creator was a pain to say the least. at first, I couldn't get it to see the ISO image on my netbook and I hadto install daemon tools to mount the image. then making the make disk was greyed out and then it popped just it just was black. it took almost 4.5hrs to create the USB boot drive!!!
now I'm booting from the USB key and the screen is just stuck on the SYSLINUX 3.82 .....caption and it is not doing anything else. what could be the problem? the USB key or the USB port? or did I miss something along the way.
