Runlevel questions

Thanks for your question. In ubuntu 6.10 and 7.04 there is
not init, but upstart which had chang some thing. If you
want modify your runlevel you must modify the
/etc/event.d/rc-default.

Thanks for the information, I'm still experimenting (which
is what linux is really really good for!!) - I'm not exactly
sure about the ubuntu runlevels. I'm more familiar with red
hat, with 6 runlevels. I'm still reading the documentation
and figuring it out!

John,

ubuntu also has the 6 runlevels that you are used to from RedHat or Fedora. The difference is that the configuration is not done via inittab, but there has been a new package developed called upstart. You can find the configuration files in the folder /etc/event.d/. Currently this configuration matches pretty much the traditional configuration it is just distributed over more files (i.e. each tty running on the ALT+F? keys has its own configuration file, each runlevel also). However, upstart will be more powerful than inittab and allow more sophisticated configurations in the future.

The real problem is why nVidia can not provide precompiled and deb file for the drivers in place of users to do all the experiments.
