Update Manager Error

Binary package hint: update-manager

Using ubuntu 9.04

my update manager is giving this error:

Could not intilialize the package information
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type 'sudo' is not known on line 54 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.'

I don't have much of a clue what is wrong with the list.

This looks like your /etc/apt/sources.list got corrupted.

if you run:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

You will find you have added sudo to the start of one of the lines

If you read the majority of the lines, you will see the format that needs to be used, you can then locate the word sudo, delete it, then make the line follow the pattern of the other lines.

If you are unsure, you can paste the entire file here and we can review.

careful what you add to files, you may slip up and get no boot, You will then have to boot to liveCD or recovery root console to fix it.
