update manager locked by other process E: Unable to lock the administration directory

Asked by cookie859

when i try to update a box pops up and said Unable to get exclusive lock This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) is already running. Please close that application first. and there is nothing running i try usein sudo and now it keeps sayig E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? how do i fix this

Ubuntu usually at startup and on regular basis try to download security updates...
So please keep your Ubuntu switched on for more than 30 minutes with no package manager opened such as Synaptic, and then try to update... from terminal.

Then to get Ubuntu fully upgraded, open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Report errors here.

Hope this helps
