The "dpkg --configure -a" is asked by the system when a previous update/upgrade process have not completely performed good, and it must run with "root" privileged administrative user.
Using the "sudo" command we can do a command as "root" user, and "dpkg --configure -a" need be run from root user.
After the "dpkg --configure -a" command i add all the usual commands (see below) you can run to be sure your system became fully upgraded.
Typing the commands as sudo the system will ask you for a password, please give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.
So please be sure your system is fully updated/upgraded with no pending packages or errors:
Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)
sudo dpkg --clear-avail
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
Hope this helps

Dear Marcorbra
I am new to UBUNTU operating system.
I have followed what you have asked me to do. However, problem still remain.. Last time I have clicked the update command and it was stated that 240 updates are available. After completion of downloading all 240, in the middle of processing an error message came. Therefore please further explain the step wise procedure I should adopt to resolve this problem. Further more, I am unable to get prints using UBUNTU although the setting is correct.
Your kind corporation on this issue is greatly appreciated.

Dear Marcobra
Thanks for your help.
Finally I succeeded in updating the ubuntu. As a new ubuntu user, I
have following points to be clarified.
Once available
updates are down loaded, is it possible to complete the updating
procedure without having an active internet connection. (this
problem arises when updating procedure cannot be completed using the
update manager itself without having gone to sudo dpkg procedure.)
How can I install
_DriverDetecti
audio-
gst-ffmpeg-
after downloading and copying to a removable drive (because my home
computer does not have an internet connection
Your advise on this
matter is greatly appreciated.

Q) Once available updates are down loaded, is it possible to complete the updating
procedure without having an active internet connection. (this
problem arises when updating procedure cannot be completed using the
update manager itself without having gone to sudo dpkg procedure.)
A) is possible but you must not give the "sudo apt-get clean" command
Q) How can I install _DriverDetectiv
audio-
gst-ffmpeg-
after downloading and copying to a removable drive (because my home
computer does not have an internet connection
A) Without an internet connection is difficult to install software due the dependency of the packages it is not impossible but is better to connect the pc to a network and install programs then disconnect and works off line.
Please post a new question for "How to download repository packages and dependencies, copy to a disk and install them offline..."
The exe files are for Windows they don't are to install software on Ubuntu.
To listen music you simply need to activate restricted format (see the next answer below) but please do this by connecting your pc to internet.
My question do you have an internet connection active... now ?
Do you have trouble to connect your pc using this active connection...?
Thank you
