update-manager fails 7.10 -> 8.04 LTS
I was attempting a distribution upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 using the graphical update-manager facility, having previously used update-manager to install all available upgrades. After downloading files the update manager got stuck saying "installing updates". Trying "ps aux | grep dpkg" showed the preconfigure process was in a Zombie state. Killing this seemed to set update-manager going again and it started installing the updates. After around 30 minutes I then got a long list of errors before update manager eventually gave up saying something along the lines of the update couldn't be completed and my operating system is probably broken :( (though it did run dpkg --configure -a).
I'm not particularly expereinced with Linuix, so what do I need to do now to fix the mess that has been created, and how do I complete the upgrade to Hardy Heron?
Thanks
P.S. I have the log files apt.log, apt-term.log, main.log, main_pre_req.log and term.log if someone can tell me how to attach them to this message!

Hello Chris,
I think the best you can do to attach them is to paste them in your message. By "installing all available upgrades" do you mean that you had gutsy-updates enable before doing the release upgrade ?
Have a nice day.

Sorry, I probably meant updates not upgrades: I opened update-manager and clicked the "check" button. This brought up details of one update, and I then clicked "Install updates". After this completed I clicked "check" again, which showed no other updates. I then clicked the "Upgrade" button, so all as it says on http://

Hello Chris,
Could you type in a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) "sudo dpkg --configure -a" tell me if there is an error doing this and then paste me the output of the "lsb_release -a" command (entered in a terminal too) ?
Thanks.

Hello again,
Sorry for the delay, was posting from work earlier and had to come home to my broken machine. Turns out it is worse than I thought as it won't boot up anymore. Having tried a recovery mode and the "resume" option I got the login screen (at incorrect resolution) but after that just a blank screen and mouse pointer, no menus. Hitting my keyboard shortcut for a terminal I got an error message that no terminal was defined. I tried again in recovery mode and selected the dpkg option. After this had run and produced an error message trying to resume a normal boot again I was able to get a terminal after login, through use of keyboard shortcut, but still no menus. I get the following responses:
"sudo dpkg --configure -a" ends with:
dpkg: too many errors, stopping
dpkg: ../../src/
Aborted (core dumped)
"lsb_release -a" gives:
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04
Codename: hardy
Hope that helps as I'm at a loss as to what to do to fix my machine!
Thanks for the help

Hello Chris,
It seems that your package manager system is really messed up... Do you have the opportunity to reinstall your whole system (doing backup of your important files) ? I'm sorry to tell this, but in this situation, according to the experience I have, there's nothing else to do as dpkg can't do it's job anymore... You apparently have a system between Gutsy and Hardy, with lots of errors and unconfigured packages... I've no other solution... If you have any question, don't hesitate to ask it to us :(

Okay, if that is the only solution :-(. Is there an admin who can convert this question to a bug report to save me reposting it? Update manager really needs fixing if it does this to my operating system...
Thanks for the help
Chris
