Upgrade from ubunntu 9.4 to latest

I had ubuntu 12.10 with a lot of problems on HP 6735s. So I reinstalled ubuntu 9.4 which is working 100%. I need to upgrade to 12.4. 12.10 lost my network driver and sound and just did not work well. What is the best way to upgrade?

Best way is to first boot Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using a LiveCD or LiveUSB session.

If everything works out-of-the-box during the LiveCD/LiveUSB session, then perform a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

You will need to upgrade to 9.10 then to 10.04 then to 12.04 and then to 12.10. This will take HOURS and a LOT of downloaded data. Have you considered clean installing Xubuntu 12.04?
