Upgrade problem

I was upgrading my laptop from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10. Due to some problems during upgrade, I could not fully upgrade. I can open my laptop, and login. However, it is only a desktop screen what I see when pc is open. I can't see my mouse pointer, terminal and the panel on the left, nothing! I checked sound button was working. I thought it is caused by graphic card, but I am not sure of it. I tried recovery (dpkg repair broken packages), but it did not solve. When using dpkg repair broken package from recovery menu, it is saying that

fsck from util-linux 2.20.1
/dev/sd5:clean 778174/6897664 files, 24894673/27586304 blocks.

I waited 10 minutes, nothing changed.

What shall I do now? Any suggestions?

Well , if the upgrade procedure went bad .. I suggest to fresh install Ubuntu 12.10 . Is difficult to find what cause the problem , what packages (probably) are corrupted.. etc..

So download Ubuntu 12.10 , create a bootable media (such as CD/DVD/USB) , boot from there and install Ubuntu 12.10 upon the current installation.

Have a backup first , of your important files .. (like : music , documents.. etc)

Could you also give an advice how I can backup my documents, as I could not reach my files from the user interface?

Do you have a live media of Ubuntu ? (such as CD/DVD/USB) ..
You can do the job from there.. boot from there.. and open nautilus file manager as root with the command below

gksudo nautilus

then navigate , find you files and copy them to an external HDD (or to another place - partition of the Internal HDD).
Look , probably you will not lose your personal files when you reinstall Ubuntu , but we do that as an extra safety. When you reach the installer window you will see an option to reinstall Ubuntu without lose your personal files , select this option and proceed.
